The Couple at Wonson's Cove
I am very thankful for the analysis the jurors (Andrew Fish and Wilhelm Neusser) took the time to write and read aloud the night of the award ceremony at Concord Art Association:
“ In Laureen Maher Bowie’s compelling landscape, the viewer’s eye wanders along a reversed s-curve, from a golden sun setting behind the horizon to a small boat, laying on a shallow beach, catching the last of the evening light. We wonder if these two, boat and sun, are the “couple,” as suggested in the painting’s title. Both, composition and palette convey a calm and peaceful atmosphere, with the blues adding a hint of melancholy. The tranquility in Maher Bowie’s beach scene can be understood as in inner state turned outward, projected on and reflected by the landscape, bringing to mind the poetic work of Edvard Munch.”
